PUBLIC NOTICE The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hereby provides initial notice of its decision to provide Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for an action located in a floodplain and wetland. Funding would be provided through VT Emergency Management to the Vermont River Conservancy to restore a floodplain, which would help prevent downstream damage during flood events. A map of the area is available upon request to karen.valevaseilev@fema.dhs.gov or (202) 699-0650. The proposed project is along Whetstone Brook at the end of Birge Street, west of downtown Brattleboro. The area is historically known as Sawdust Alley. The project would restore natural floodplain function by removing 38,000 cubic yards of gravel, regrading the site, and adding plantings. A wetland area in northeast part of parcel would also be restored. After restoration, the property would be used as a public park, with a parking area and walking paths. The project is within a mapped special flood hazard area (100-year floodplain and regulatory floodway) and riverine wetland habitat. FEMA is working with the project proponent to prepare an environmental assessment for the project. Comments about this project and floodplain/wetland impacts are encouraged to be submitted within 15 days of the date of this publication to: Eric Kuns Senior Environmental Protection Specialist Federal Emergency Management Agency, Boston, MA eric.kuns@fema.dhs.gov (202) 805-9089 AD# 55244 03/18/2021
